East Village Overview
When many of the avant-garde and artist types of Greenwich Village moved East for cheaper rents, the East Village became New York's bohemian center. However, with New York City, the East Village has boomed in recent years and is also a community of  professionals and students. But, beware, the East Village still retains a seedy element might not appeal to you.

East Village Residents & Culture
The East Village has shed much of its seedy reputation and has evolved into eclectic mix of young residents. During the day, the streets are buzzing with music shops, book stores, art boutiques and coffee houses. During the night, the East Village is alive with live music, bars and hip nightspots.

The East Village's Tompkins Square Park is a local gathering spot especially for the great dog run. The main drags of the East Village are St Marks Place and Second Avenue. Little India and Little Ukraine are located in the East Village and offer some of the least expensive ethnic food in New York

East Village Residences & Rents
Buildings in the East Village are predominately older 4-5 story walk-ups. By New York standards, the rent in the East Village is cheap, but residents here sacrifice amenities and east commuting. Alphabet City is less expensive than the rest of the East Village.

East Village Transportation & Commuting
The green line is the only subway line in the East Village, so subway travel is not easy. Alphabet City and anywhere east of 1st Ave will require a 10-15 minute walk to a subway station. However, like all east side areas, buses are still convenient.
